What subjects can I teach?
Further Education tutors can cover a wide range of courses, from vocational to academic.
On this page you can find out more about the type of things you could teach. So whatever your skills and experience there’s a subject to match.
Professions, vocations, and trades
You could be training up the next generation of workers in your field, by teaching career focused courses that your students could go into once qualified.
Here are some of the areas you could teach:

- business, administration, and office management
- catering and hospitality
- childcare and education
- construction
- creative and design
- digital and IT
- emergency and armed services
- engineering and manufacturing
- hair and beauty
- health and life sciences

- social care
- transport and logistics
You could also teach academic subjects like:
- English
- maths
- science
- social sciences
- humanities
- modern foreign languages
- art and design
- performing arts
These are courses that are relevant to students who are likely undertaking Level 2 or 3 qualifications like GCSEs and A levels.
The level of courses you could teach
In Further Education you could be teaching:
- GCSEs (Level 1 to Level 2)
- A levels (Level 3)
- T levels (new qualifications in technical subjects, broadly equivalent to 3 A levels)
- BTECs (Level 1 to Level 7)
- apprenticeships (Level 1 to Level 7)
- entry level courses
Some Further Education employers will require you to have a degree or a relevant qualification in the subject you want to teach.
It is best to check what the requirements are in the job description or have a conversation with the employer to understand what they will accept.
You can also teach GCSE's and A levels at secondary schools. You can read more about this on the Get Into Teaching website.
You can find out which courses your local college has available on the Search for a teaching job page.
